What makes the 9 different from the 7?

This is the question worth answering honestly, because the technology level choice is where most people get lost. All Moxi S-RX hearing aids, regardless of level, use the same ERA chip, the same physical housing, the same Bluetooth system, and the same charger.

They’re all rechargeable RIC (Receiver-in-Canal) aids, meaning the main unit sits behind the ear with a thin wire to a small speaker in the ear canal. They all include Noise Reduction, Speech Enhancement, and AutoFocus. The difference is in how the aids handle the hard stuff.

The Level 9 is the only tier with AutoFocus 360, which means it can identify and enhance speech coming from any direction around you, not just from in front. In a noisy group situation where someone behind you asks a question, or where two conversations are happening simultaneously from different directions, the S-RX 9 has the hardware and software to handle that. The S-RX 7 does not.

The other significant difference is HyperFocus. This is a feature that narrows the microphones’ focus to a tight beam in front of you in very loud noise, dramatically improving what you can hear. On the S-RX 9, it activates automatically when the aids detect you’re in a very loud environment with speech. On the S-RX 7, you have to activate it manually.

AutoFocus 360 uses all four microphones across both hearing aids to work out where speech is coming from and enhance it dynamically from that direction. Dynamic Noise Reduction works alongside it to reduce competing background sounds in real time.

HyperFocus takes a different approach. In very loud noise, the best strategy is sometimes to narrow your focus significantly rather than trying to hear from all directions. HyperFocus directs all four microphones into a tight beam in front of you, giving you maximum clarity for the person you’re speaking to when the environment is at its most challenging.

On the S-RX 9, both of these engage automatically. The hearing aids detect the environment, classify it, and apply the right processing without any input from you.

Connectivity and the Remote Plus app

The Moxi S-RX 9 connects via Bluetooth to both iPhone and Android smartphones, as well as tablets and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. You can pair up to eight devices and have two connected simultaneously. The ERA chip provides double the Bluetooth transmission range of previous Unitron models, and hands-free calling works reliably through the aids themselves.

The Remote Plus app gives you additional control when you want it. You can adjust volume and comfort settings, change programmes, see a summary of your listening environment history and daily wear time, and use the Ratings feature to flag moments when the aids are performing well or struggling. That feedback goes directly to your audiologist, who can use it to fine-tune your settings at your next appointment.

The Log It All feature in the background records which environments you’ve been spending time in, which helps your audiologist understand how your aids are performing in your real life, rather than guessing from a clinic appointment.

There are two new DNN-powered Optional App Programmes, SpeechSonic and NoiseSonic, that let you adjust how the aids handle speech and background noise in the moment.

Battery life and charging

A full charge from the included Charger RIC S takes around three hours and delivers up to 24 hours of use. The precise figure depends on the degree of your hearing loss and how much streaming you do, but in normal use, most wearers will comfortably get through a full waking day on a single charge.

If you travel or are often away from home, the optional ChargerGo has its own built-in battery and charges the aids on the go without needing a mains connection. It’s not included in the standard price but is worth considering if your lifestyle demands it.

Easy maintenance
